Are you looking to anchor your lounge furniture with a soft foundation or select the perfect rug to transform your kitchen or dining room with easy-care appeal? Perhaps you want to purchase a high-quality, affordable rug to bring variety or texture into a family room, entryway, or hall. Flat woven rugs are a staple of the rug world, cherished for their long tradition of offering practical appeal with elevated style. Rugmakers have used looms to create cotton and wool flatweave rugs for centuries, from intricately patterned kilim rugs to thick Soumak weave designs. Today, rugmakers use these same techniques to make modern masterpieces—even crafting pieces with synthetic fibers adding to the versatility flat weave rugs provide. With such a wide variety available, it can be helpful to start with some basics about why these rugs are so great and how to use them in your home.

What Are the Benefits of a Flatweave Rug?

If you are shopping for rugs for your home, you almost certainly have come across flatweave or flat weave rugs. Also referred to as handwoven, hand-loomed, or flat woven rugs, these terms all comprise a style of construction in which artisan weavers craft the rug by hand on a loom. The result is a durable handmade rug that can feature a nearly endless array of patterns and designs. Unlike hand-knotted rugs, this loom technique lends these rugs a low-pile texture and also makes them reversible and easy to clean. It also means they hold up incredibly well under heavy foot traffic. A cotton flatweave or handwoven wool rug is a perfect way to introduce natural fiber texture into a lived-in space where wear and tear is part of the fabric of life.

Though they usually come at a higher price than machine-made rugs, flatweave area rugs and runners can be relatively affordable compared to other handmade styles, offering artisan appeal with incredible value. Plus, their lighter construction makes them easier to move and store, so these rugs are an excellent option for an evolving space or to bring variety into your home design.

How Do I Style My Flatweave Area Rug or Runner?

The question of how to style a flatweave is as endless as the styles available. Beyond aesthetics—and at Lulu and Georgia, we have everything from tonal, geometric designs to traditional Persian-style rugs—the question of where and how to place a flatweave in your home primarily comes down to materiality.

A wool or cotton flatweave rug can be a versatile fit throughout the home. The low-pile texture and natural fiber offer a soft yet durable foundation underfoot. They are well-suited for under heavy furniture like a sectional sofa in an open-plan space or casual lounge. On the other hand, the reversibility and easy-care appeal also make them perfect for entryways, kitchens, or dining rooms. Flatweave runners are especially popular for bringing an unexpected touch of artisan texture to a hallway or utility room.

For an extra supple touch, check out a viscose flatweave rug. Viscose is a synthetic fiber, but unlike other synthetic fibers designed for utility and value, viscose is designed to mimic the smooth texture of silk. A viscose flatweave is best for a bedroom or cozy den where comfort is essential and there is less foot traffic. Similarly, vintage flatweave rugs can offer a one-of-a-kind feature piece for your home, but you may want to style one in a more formal lounge or study, and they may be best avoided altogether in a home with pets or young children.

However you style it, a flatweave rug allows you the flexibility to showcase the nuances of your design aesthetic. Rugs are essential for creating a beautiful and inviting space, and flatweave designs allow you the versatility and durability to bring your vision to life with a practical touch. Loved ones and visitors can immediately get a sense of who you are by seeing how you have utilized this foundational layer of decor to build on your home's look.
